Raymond Eugene Reed, 88, formerly of Oxford, Indiana joined his family in Heaven on September 24th, 2015.
October 2, 1926 was a happy autumn day when he was born to the late Rufus and Mary Reed. His parents lovingly taught him to live by the Golden Rules, respect and love for God and his country.
Raymond attended Oxford High School. He was a member of the Blue Devils basketball team, the team that went to the state semifinals in 1945.
After graduation from high school he was drafted into the Army and served 3 years as a railway security police during the allied occupation of Germany. His unit guarded the Frankfurt to Paris mail trains. Also, he was a guard on the train that returned Treasures that had been stolen by the Nazis back to Budapest.
While stationed in Frankfurt Germany he met his beloved wife Maria Voll. They were married on July 10, 1949.
Upon his return to civilian life Raymond began a railroad career. He held various positions during his 30 year career with the New York Central, Penn Central, and Conrail. He retired in 1979.
Raymond was a member of the Oxford Federated Church, he served as deacon and elder while living in Oxford. He was a member of the Lion's Club, the Fowler VFW, and the American Legion.
Raymond touched many lives in his lifetime. His love and kindness and many acts of caring will be greatly missed by his wife of 66 years, his family, friends, and neighbors.
Raymond was one of the Greatest Generation.
Surviving in deep sorrow are his wife Maria, daughter-in-law Diana, his grandchildren AJ and Sarah, his brother Paul Reed, sister-in-law Rose Marie Reed, niece Mary Anne Workman, nephews James and Michael Reed, and David Ade.
He was preceded in death by his son Alan J. Reed, brother Glen I. Reed, and sister Mildred Ade. His brother-in-law and sisters-in-law and nieces in Germany will also mourn his loss.
A celebration of Raymond's life will be held at 2:00pm on Tuesday, September 29th, at Flanner and Buchanan- Carmel, 325 E. Carmel Drive. The family will receive visitors from 1:00pm until the time of service.
