Tribute & Message From The Family

John Richard Jeffries

John Richard Jeffries was born in Marion, Alabama on Nov. 2, 1935 to Eddie and Elizabeth Jeffries. John had one brother (Eddie Jr.) and 2 sisters (Helen and Yvonne). John excelled in school and graduated in the top 5% of his Huntington High School graduating class of 1953.
John graduated from Virginia State College in 1957. Immediately following graduation he entered the Army at the rank of Second Lieutenant. After basic training, he completed airborne training school but he didn't stop there – he successfully graduated from the Army Ranger School. In 1962, John became a Special Forces Soldier. John learned many languages and served his country valiantly in the Vietnam War. During his military career, he received many awards and commendations and retired from the US Army in 1989 with the rank of Colonel.
John received his Master's Degree from Eastern Michigan University in 1970. Upon graduation, he obtained a position at Purdue University with the Office of Admissions. He directly oversaw efforts to increase minority enrollment at the university. When John began his role at Purdue there were less than 100 African American students, when he left his tenure at Purdue, the minority enrollment had increased significantly.
In 1975 John was appointed as Personnel Division Commander of the Indiana State Police. Similar to his efforts at Purdue, John worked tirelessly to increase the number of minority officers. In 1998, he retired from the Indiana State Police but continued his work as a founder and executive officer in the Indiana State Black Troopers Association until he passed.
John was married to Beatrice Boyd and had three daughters: Tammy Jeffries, Kelli Jeffries, Wendy (Warren) Dukes, and one son Jeffery (Stacey) Parker. He also had several grandchildren: Amber Dunham, Richard (Dorcas) Dunham, Izaak Parker, Camryn Dukes, Jackson Dukes, and one great-grandson John Richard Dunham.
He married Shirley Walker later in life whom he leaves to cherish his memory. With this union he inherited three more daughters, two sons and a host of grandchildren. John and Shirley loved their time together. They enjoyed their quiet time but also loved traveling and attending many social functions (dances, galas and parties) with their close group of friends. John was a faithful member of Coppin Chapel and was very active in the Sons of Allen and with Men's Day Functions.
John was a mentor and a friend to countless people. He was an amazing leader, officer, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He led a full life touching countless people. He leaves a legacy of service to his family, friends and community. He was an officer and a gentleman. His family loved him dearly and he will be greatly missed.

"I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me though he were dead, yet shall he live: And whosever liveth and believeth in me shall never die" St. John 11:25-26

I am so sorry for your loss. I met Colonel Jeffries in 1978 when I left Active Duty and joined the Army Reserves. He was very impressive, especially to a Sergeant like me! Although he did not talk much about his Vietnam tour, his uniform spoke for him. The medals he received for honor, valor and bravery spoke volumes. Colonel Jeffries encouraged me to become a Warrant Officer and in 1984, I was commissioned a CW2. I have him to thank for that. He had many important positions throughout his time in the Army Reserves and was well respected. He was a mentor to many Soldiers and was considered an officer that would provide advice and make a solid decision. He was one of the most influential people in my career. He was more than a mentor to me; he was a valued friend. May God place him with friends and family member that went before him and may he meet other brave Veterans in Heaven.

Dick and I enrolled at Virginia State College (University) the same year and became friends shortly thereafter. We were trained in the same ROTC unit, played softball, and engaged in many extra curricular activities together. While our careers took different paths,we managed to stay in contact and got together as often as possible usually at "VSU Homecoming"when he visited me and his east coast family. He was a good friend and I will miss our many private conversations. It is my hope that fond memories of happy times will sustain you as family as your grieve. I know they will bring comfort to me as his friend in the days and years ahead. Al M. Britt Sr.

My condolences to the Jeffries family. I and many others are indebted to Mr. Jeffries for his commitment to doing what's right and honorable. He was not a perfect man none of us are, but he was a real man. One that was willing to stand up for his principles, regardless of the consequences. Words cannot adequately convey what Mr. Jeffries' deeds and actions made possible for me and other Indiana State Police employees.
We live in a time when people idolize athletes, rock stars, and movie stars. In my opinion, Mr. Jeffries was a real star, truly worthy of the title.
