Tribute & Message From The Family

Message From The Family

Thank you for your support during this difficult time. Please enhance this tribute to Benjamin by adding your memories and photos.

Benjamin Allan McVey was born in Alexandria, Virginia on September 10, 1990, to parents Brose and Carol Anne McVey. In northern Virginia he was near his maternal grandparents, John and Carol Donohue of Denton, Maryland and the extended Donohue family.

He moved with his parents to Westfield, Indiana in the spring of 1991, close to his paternal grandparents, Daniel and Myra McVey, and his large group of McVey and Purdy relatives.

Ben attended school at Westfield Washington, Carmel Clay Schools, and at The Midwest Academy in Carmel. Following his junior year in high school, Ben left Carmel taking his beloved horse Sweet Loraine to live and train wild Spanish Mustangs on the Cayuse Ranch in Moorecroft, Wyoming. He later lived and worked on a sister ranch in New Mexico, before returning home to continue his education.

Ben lived and studied at the Earle C. Clements Victory Technical High School in Morganfield, Kentucky and earned his diploma there in 2010. Since that time, Ben has worked hard at various jobs and continued to pursue his education through classes at Ivy Tech Community College.

Creative from birth, Ben was a talented writer and artist. Ben was passionate about music, and was, himself, a gifted musician who played viola, concert string bass and the bass guitar. He had a profound connection with animals of all kinds, but especially his two dogs, Kymani and Rocky, and his cat, China, who he recently rescued.

Ben is survived by his parents Brose McVey (Suzanne), Carol Anne and Mark Kemper; three brothers John Daniel McVey, Harry McVey and Ross Kemper; grandparents Daniel N. and Jane Ann McVey of Carmel, IN and Carol A. Donohue of Denton MD, and a large, loving extended family of aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his grandmother Myra Ann McVey, grandfather John A. Donohue III, and uncle John A. Donohue IV.
Ben was a passionate, empathetic man who lived each moment with thoughtfulness, unparalleled intensity, and an inspiring compassion for the underdog.

Following the visitation on Thursday, April 30, there will be a private service at Crown View Cemetery, Sheridan.

We encourage a contribution to Ben's Ranch Foundation, Inc., a charitable foundation being established to support causes consistent with Ben's values and heart. In particular, we hope to give other struggling young people the opportunity to live on a ranch and support other young people facing the same challenges Ben did. Dear Carol Anne, JD, Mark, Brose, and Family,
We wish there was something we could do or say that would make this terrible loss easier for you all. It seems like only yesterday that he was a little boy.It is such a shock to lose a beautiful young man at such a young age. We can't imagine how hard this must be. I have a special place in my heart for kindred spirits that recognize the incredible therapeutic and healing powers that animals bring to our lives. We think Ben's Ranch is a wonderful tribute in his memory and hope you find some peace in the coming weeks and months by thinking of others that Ben's loss might help. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

May God wrap his arms around you and comfort you, and may those who knew Ben keep him alive in thought and memory as they share stories of his life and their experiences with him.

To the family of Benjamin McVey:

Please accept our deepest condolences on Ben's passing. We have many fond memories of him as a young boy living next door to us in Broad Ripple. He was always so polite and full of smiles. We will cherish the time together forever. It was always fun to watch the kids play on Crestview Avenue. We send many prayers and blessings to his parents and his wonderful brothers JD and Harry. He will be missed.

In deepest sympathy,

- on Ben's passing -

I weep for all that you were
and all that you might have been.

I weep for all who loved you
and the emptiness never to be filled.

I weep for the lives you touched
though you never knew.

I weep for my self
and the ache I feel in your passing.

I weep for the time lost
never to be recovered.

I weep for your empty saddle
and the trails not ridden.

There are no answers,
only questions, doubts, fears.

There is no consolation.
Only the steps forward through grief
into this new life you've left us to live.

Dear Brose, Carol Anne and all family members, I weep for your loss and pray that your many wonderful memories of Ben carry you through this most difficult period. I still remember visiting you many years ago in Indiana. We had spent the night with you and as we woke up and wandered down to the kitchen for a cup of coffee, there was Ben. He was perched on a spring rocking-horse where he rode non-stop as we planned the day's activities over the squeaking ride. He rode for what seemed like an hour without stopping. The name he had given his horse toy escapes me but it was obvious that he had a genuine love for horses at a very young age. Ben's Ranch is a wonderful and fitting way to remember and honor his kind soul.

We are heartbroken and grief-stricken to hear about Ben. He was so kind and such a good friend to Brian; I remember like it was yesterday, all the fun times and formative years the boys from the Rohrer Meadows neighborhood shared together. I will always remember him fondly and with much affection; his well-mannered, gentle, kind, shy and respectful manner made a lasting impression on me. I remember his sweet smile. I remember him standing at my front door asking if Brian was home and could hang out. I remember the boys talking about their adventures in the fort over in old Mrs. Rohrer's back yard. I remember the music and the jam sessions with the boys' band. I remember a thousand little things the boys did together; the every-day and the special. But most of all I remember what a good boy Ben was and am so thankful he was friends with my son. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very difficult time. May the love of family and friends bring you peace and comfort in the days ahead.
