Tribute & Message From The Family

SCOTT DANIEL BUTLER, 59, Noblesville, died Wednesday, September 2, 2015 after a long battle with Multiple Myeloma. He fought with his last breath to remain with his wife and fellow adventurer, Jane Williams Butler. He was proud of his heritage: born in Honolulu, Hawaii to his Army father, Larry G Butler (deceased) and his half Cherokee mother, Mary McIntosh Butler who survives.
Education (whether formal or informal) was so important to Scott. While in the U.S. Navy, he took correspondence courses which enabled him upon discharge to graduate from Purdue University in 2.5 years. He graduated from Yale Law School in 1982 and audited divinity courses through Yale Divinity School even after he became disabled. He challenged and encouraged so many people along their own educational journeys.
Besides his wife and mother, Scott leaves behind his children: Nicole (Matt) Klocek; Tim Butler; Derek Butler; Natalie (Michael) Smith and Daniel (Lynae) Butler. He adored his grandsons: Luke Daniel Klocek, Landen Scott Butler and Samuel Robert Smith. A fourth grandson is due in January, 2016. Siblings: Sarah Beth (James) Manis, Frank (Trish Santini) Butler and Anna (Michael) Webb also survive. Many former colleagues were blessed with nuggets of advice from Scott on how to read a survey, how to write a well-constructed letter, etc. That was his gift: to teach and educate. He continued this through his journal on caringbridge.org. His writings enabled followers to know and understand more fully his treatment issues with Multiple Myeloma.
Scott loved traveling (he and his wife completed their 50 state quest in 2013 even after his diagnosis), attending Colts games, his pickup truck, biking, the Cubs, music (especially Bob Dylan) and golfing. Beyond these things, nothing would have pleased him more than picking up a red pen and editing this obituary which would have undoubtedly flowed more succinctly and with such wonderful prose.
Family will welcome friends 4-8 pm on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at Flanner and Buchanan, 325 E Carmel Drive, Carmel, IN 46032 with funeral services at 2:30 pm Friday, September 11, 2015 at St. Peter's United Church of Christ, 3106 E Carmel Drive, Carmel, IN 46032 with calling one hour prior. Burial will follow immediately after funeral services at Crownland Cemetery, Noblesville.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the IU Simon Cancer Center for multiple myeloma research. Please make checks payable to: IU Foundation and mail to IUF, PO Box 7072, Indianapolis, IN 46207-7072. Indicate "In Memory of Scott Butler" on the memo line. Dear Sarah & family.
Thinking and praying for you all today. While we didn't know Scott personally he was a becon light in many of Sarah's conversations with me over the years. I'm confident the great creator has welcomed him and I believe his Cherokee heritage has brought great light to this world through him walking this vast place. Many prayers and much love to you Sarah and your family as you say goodbye for now.

I vividly remember the first time I met Scott. It was over 30 years ago. I'm introduced and shake hands with Scott Butler, Esquire. There he stood in a suit with a red bow tie and vest. Boy was I feeling intimated. Then we spoke and he put me at ease instantly. Scott had such a warm and kind personality with a very witty sense of humor. Scott was one of a kind, a warrior until the end. He will be missed greatly. My thoughts and prayers are with Jane and their families.

My thought and prayers are with this amazing family. God welcomed another angel to watch over the loved ones he left on earth. Scott will always be in your hearts until you meet again.

Jane and Butler family. What a great honor it has been for this strong courageous man to have blessed me with his love and friendship. Also his wife Jane for her strength and courageous battle dealing with this horrible cancer. The role of a caregiver is one that weighs on your mind and body. The stress you go through while all the time you wouldn't have it any other way. I'm so sad for all of us that have lost this light in our eyes but oh so happy that Scott is free of pain and at home. See you at the house and the day you two love birds get to see one another again will be a glorious day. Hugs, love and prayers. Thank you Scott for everything.

My relationship with Scott as a brother member at St. Peter's UCC was quite limited, but I was amazed and much inspired by his frequent commentaries through the Caring Bridge emails many of us received. I pray that Jane and all family members will know God's strength and peace in these days of sadness and grief.

I went to high school with Scott. He was a big influence on my life. I was so grateful that he emailed me last spring. We shared our experiences with our enemy-cancer. He shared his thanks to and pride of his family. His family is in my thoughts and prayers as Scott has been and will continue to be in my memory.
