Gladys Johnson, a resident of Hooverwood and member of Pleasant View Lutheran Church, died on April 7, 2015. She was born October 28, 1926 on a farm near Hitchcock, South Dakota. She taught kindergarten in Hitchcock, Aberdeen, and Rapid City, South Dakota, before moving to Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1964, where she taught elementary school until 1979, at Indianapolis Public Schools 69, 36, 14, and 27.
In 1967 Gladys married her husband, Maurice L. Johnson. He preceeded her in death in 1992. Gladys was a member of various teacher organizations, including Association of Early Childhood Education, Retired Teachers of Arlington High School, and The Breakfast Club, in Indianapolis. She was an active member of Pleasant View Lutheran Church, a volunteer member of staff, Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, volunteer flower coordinator, greeter and usher, and member of Tuesday Night Bible Study. Gladys was honored as the Church Woman of the year in 1994, and received the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2003.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Johnson was preceeded in death by her parents Andrew and Susanna Gross of Hitchcock, South Dakota; sisters Susie Walter and Amanda Gross of Huron, South Dakota; brother-in-law Sam A. Walter and niece Lynette Jean Walter of Hitchcock, South Dakota.
She is survived by her niece, LaVonne Kirkpatrick and husband Rick of Springdale, Arkansas and nephew Delbert Walter of Huron, South Dakota.
Visitation and services will be held at Flanner & Buchanan Cemetery and Funeral Center, Washington Park North, 2702 Kessler Blvd. W. Dr., Indianapolis. Visitation: 10:00 a.m. Funeral service: 11:00 a.m. Rev. Melvin Schroeder, officiating.
