Joanna S. Walker 87, died August 2, 2013 of a stroke. She was born on April 6, 1926 to Edna Davis Smith and Roy C. Smith in Whitestown, IN. She was the seventh of eight children. Joanna was preceded in death by her siblings: Preston Smith, Winfred Smith, George Smith, Stanley Smith (Bonnie), Julia Smith Moore, Miriam Smith Troxel and Doris Smith Mortsolf and granddaughter, Ali Cook.

She was raised in Indianapolis and graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in 1943. During WWII she was an executive secretary at International Harvester while her husband, Douglas L. Walker, served in the Army Air Corps. She wrote Doug every day during his three years in service.

Joanna entered real estate in 1957 with the R. C. Smith Realty Company, which was founded by her father. After his death, her sister formed Julia Moore Realty Company. Joanna worked there until her sister retired in 1978. Then she joined the F.C. Tucker Company until her retirement in 2012.

She had a distinguished career during her 55 years as a realtor. Joanna was one of 47 women who chartered the Indianapolis Chapter of the Women's Council of Realtors in 1964. Throughout the years, she held the office of Secretary, Vice President, President and Board Member in Women's Council. In 1986 she was selected as The Women's Council Distinguished Woman Realtor of the Year. The Eastern Division of MIBOR chose her as Realtor of the Year in 1990. In 1991 she received the Community Service Award from the Metropolitan Indianapolis Board of Realtors (MIBOR). The Indiana Association of Realtors presented her with the Distinguished Citizen Award in 1991 for her dedication to the real estate industry and for her involvement in the community and civic organizations.

In 2002 she received the Fred C. Tucker Sr. Award, the company's highest award, which is given to the individual who best exemplifies the high standards and traditions initiated by the company's founder. During her 34 years at F.C. Tucker Company, she was a valued mentor to many new realtors. Some of them even called her "Mom". She was well known for her expertise in zoning, contracts, and Warren Township. Her ability to recall details, impeccable business ethics and excellent customer service were legendary.

She also served her community well for many years. The Mayor of Indianapolis recognized Joanna for more than 20 years of dedicated service on the Indianapolis Metropolitan Board of Zoning Appeals. She also served as a Precinct Committeeman and was a delegate to the Republican State Convention. She was the Republican Vice-Ward Chairman in Warren Township for 15 years. On the state and national levels she was a member of the Indiana Board of Realtors and was a delegate to both the state and national Realtors conventions. Joanna worked many years as a voting member of the MIBOR Realtors Political Action Committee.

Joanna is 50-year member of Old Bethel United Methodist Church. She was also a long-time member and supporter of the Ransburg YMCA. Joanna was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club International, Toastmistress International, the League of Women Voters, and also served on the Indianapolis Land Valuation Commission.

Joanna and her husband had the opportunity to travel to places they only dreamed and read about as children: China, Russia, Finland, England, Holland, Canada, and Hawaii.

Family and friends were Joanna's priority throughout her life. Fifty years ago she and Doug established the tradition of an annual spring trip to Florida with their children, their siblings and their families. The annual trip continues and now includes her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. It is the highlight of the year for all the family to be together for an extended time. The memories of those happy days will be treasured by all of us.
In 1960 Joanna co-founded the Walker and Associates Insurance Agency with her husband. Their son, R. Douglas Walker, currently runs the agency.

She is survived by her loving husband of 70 years, Douglas L. Walker; children, Karen J. Reynolds (Bill), Leeann Cook Murray, and R. Douglas Walker; Grandchildren, Wm. Bradley Reynolds, D. Andrew Reynolds (Stephanie), Justin Cook, Gwendalyn Walker Cook (Dave Jones), Clayton Walker Cook, Lindsay Walker, Robert Walker, and Sarah Walker; Great grandchildren, Nathan Reynolds, Annabelle Reynolds, Caroline Jo Reynolds and Kai Douglas – all of whom adored her and will miss her greatly. Joanna was a generous, kind, and loving parent, grandparent and friend. Her quick wit and sense of humor brightened many situations. She was a role model and inspiration to us all. Her children always admired her; and were proud to call her their mother. Doug loved her from the day he first saw her and was proud to call her his wife.

Joanna gave in death as she gave in life by being a tissue donor.
