Bob Donnelly
90, Indianapolis, passed away peacefully in his sleep early in the morning of 10 May 2015. He was born in Cincinnati on 20 August 1924 to Robert Donnelly, Sr. and Reba McAninch Donnelly. Bob was a graduate of Elder High School and the University of Cincinnati. He proudly served his country in World War II as an officer in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served as a P-47N "Thunderbolt" fighter pilot in the 1st Squadron, 413th Fighter Group, 301st Fighter Wing, Eighth U.S. Air Force. Serving in the Pacific Theater of operations, he was decorated for heroism in aerial combat, receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross from then Brigadier General Jimmy Doolittle on Ie Shima, Okinawa.
After the war, Bob finished his college studies and married his childhood sweetheart and love of his life, the late Claire Kortekamp Donnelly, on 3 September 1949. They were married over 64 years until the time of her passing in 2013. Bob worked for the Kroger Company in Cincinnati and Stokely Van Camp in Indianapolis, in sales and marketing, until his retirement in 1986. After retiring from Stokely, he continued to work for the George Booth Company of Indianapolis for many years.
Bob was a passionate golfer and a long-time member and former president of the Country Club of Indianapolis. He immensely enjoyed his membership there and enjoyed countless hours of golf and post-round games of gin rummy.
Bob was preceded in death by his loving wife Claire. He is survived by his two sons, Kevin (Marie) and Keith (Katie) Donnelly; grandchildren Sean, Kevin, Jr, Meaghan, and Bridget Donnelly, and Robert E. (Trey) Donnelly III; as well as five great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Wounded Warrior Project.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on 14 May 2015 at noon at St Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 3352 W. 30th Street, Indianapolis, with visitation at the church beginning at 10 a.m., prior to the mass. Graveside services with military honors will be held at Crown Hill Cemetery Field of Valor, immediately following the mass. Arrangements by Flanner and Buchanan-Washington Park North.
