Charlotte J. Kaufman passed away at St. Vincent's Hospice on January 20, 2008. She was born on June 23, 1924, in Bay City, Michigan, to Gustaf and Elizabeth Johansson. After attending Goodman Theatre in Chicago, Charlotte was selected by the USO to serve as a civilian actress in Germany after World War II. In the late 1940s, Charlotte moved to New York City to pursue her career in acting, where she met her husband-to-be, Marty Kaufman. Charlotte and Marty married in 1948, and Marty predeceased Charlotte in 1982. After moving to Indianapolis from the Chicago region in the early 1960s, Charlotte acted in many local theater productions. She was a friend and colleague of many prominent local directors, actors, and producers of her generation, including Howard Lambert, Danny Kasle, Charlie Staff, Adolf Kerber, Bob Swan, Bob Berry, Bernie Werger, John Mowry, and Margaret Roberts. Charlotte considered her most important achievement to be that of founding Young Actors Theatre, the oldest not-for-profit children's theater program in the Indianapolis area. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Young Actors Theatre, co Justin Wade, Director, 1201 North Central Ave, Indianapolis IN 46202.
